April 2024 Newsletter

We are so glad to welcome spring back to Grand Haven elderly care in Eldridge, IA! The gardens are just beginning to bloom and the air is becoming warm and sweet with the smell of pollen coming back to life. We did not have a bad winter at all, we just had winter all in one month… or one really bad week with 25 inches of snow. We survived and Grand Haven did not miss a beat. Our dedicated employees communicated and did a lot of white knuckled driving to make it happen and we appreciate their dedication to all of us.

With April showers comes the warming of the earth, and you mix that with humidity… well we get a few strong storms for time to time and I thought I would go over what the difference was between a watch and a warning:

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Be prepared! Severe thunderstorms are possible in and near the watch area. Stay informed and be ready to act if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued. The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Take Action! Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property. Take shelter in a substantial building. Get out of mobile homes that can blow over in high winds. Warnings typically encompass a much smaller area (around the size of a town or small county) that may be impacted by a large hail or damaging wind identified by an NWS forecaster on radar or by a trained spotter/law enforcement who is watching the storm.

We are truly blessed to have a one-story building that was constructed by our own Callahan Construction in Dubuque IA, so we are as safe as we can be. We also have the backup generator so if everyone’s lights go out, we stay the course to keep our residents comfortable and safe.

Happy Easter to all of you and remember the thought of the day:

Each of us is a sum total of all of our life experiences. We have families, education; we have seen places; we have worked so hard; we have done remarkable things and seen remarkable things in our lifetime. We need to celebrate each person’s greatness, so let’s be kinder than necessary, for everyone carries some type of burden.
